Despite its peripheral location Fonó Music Hall of Buda has become one of the cultural hot spots in Budapest over the past two decades.

It was founded by electric engineer, musician and folksong collector József Lukács in 1995 as a non-profit organization to promote, preserve and publish Hungarian folk music and dance, in and out of Hungary.

Fonó was involved in the largest scale folksong collection campaign of recent times called “The last hour”. In cooperation with the House of Traditions Fonó published a series of 50 CDs selecting from more than 1000 hours of recorded music from all over the Carpathian Basin.

Besides folk music and dance Fonó is home to various cultural programs such as children's programs, art exhibitions, festivals, jazz and world music concerts. Performances of transborder Hungarian bands are exclusive programs of Fonó.

Fonó is a venue for folk dance parties with hundreds of participants, folk and world music festivals also.

Since its foundation more than 200 CDs were released by Fonó. It is a multi-awarded cultural institution and has been among the best 20 world music publishing companies on the Womex Top Label list since 2013.
