Orfű

The village is situated in the Mecsek Mountain, 14 kilometers from Pécs.

At the border of Orfű is the Sárkány (Dragon) Ravine, a rocky valley which is a nature preserve though there is no marked tourist path going through it. 

Attractions

It is worth visiting the Mill Museum at the eastern end of Orfű (Dózsa György Street) which has a still functioning mill. In Mecsekrákos, at 3 Széchenyi Square there is a traditionally built monument house.

At the northwestern end of Lake Pécs stand the memorial of Ottó Herman (1835-1914), famous scientist and anthropologist. His areas of research were the spiders and birds of Hungary, fishing and its tools and the life of shepherds. 

History

The Orfű lake system was constructed in the 1960’s based on the plans of Sándor Palkó, the holiday resort started developing in the 1970’s. The village as it is today is made up of settlements Orfű, Bános, Mecsekrákos, Mecsekszakál és Tekeres which were joined together in 1974.

Most of the houses serve holiday purposes so tourists can choose from many motels, hotels, restaurants and camping places. Lake Orfű and Lake Pécs are used for holiday purposes, the visitor can swim or try water sports, Lake Ottó Herman is a fish reserve and the lake and its surroundings are a nature reserve.

After the Ottoman Occupation the desolated villages were repopulated by Hungarian, German, Southern-Slav population though on Bánás only Hungarians and on Tekeres only Germans settled which today shows on the types of houses built.
