Baranjsko Petrovo Selo

The former self-administered settlement found in the Dráva nook administratively belong to Petlovac (Petlovac) now. Baransko Petrovo Selo with approximately 570 inhabitants awaits the visitors near the border crossing of Beremend.

On the Sunday of the carnival the Busós walking through the streets of Baransko Petrovo Selo, and on Monday the children busó-walking is held. On Tuesday the Busós appear in the streets of Izsép, and on the same day it ends in Draz, but the most fascinating is the Petárda busó walking the „petaračke buše”.

In the village exists the Deacon St. Lawrence Martyr Parish seat which was founded in 1903, and the saint’s day is held on the 10th of August.

History

Among local people the settlement is known under the name of Petarda since in historical books it was first mentioned in 1276 under the Hungarian name of Peturd, and then in 1332 as Peterd According to the Ottoman defters (tax records) it was inhabited during the Turkish occupation. During the reign of Kasimir Esterházy, the lord of the manor, (19th century) there were about 900 farmers and cattle breeders living in the settlement. Its present name dates from the period after the World War I.

The place is the seat of the Parish of St.  Lawrence deacon and martyr, founded back in 1903, and Patron Saint’s Day is celebrated on August 10th.
